PANOPTIWORK TALKS\2 THREE STORIES OF HOW I WATCH YOU AT WORK
On the 19th of October, at 17.00, panoptiwork will host a second talk entitled: “Three stories of how I watch you at work: how technology shapes workplace surveillance, hierarchies and how to protect workers’ rights”. The talk will be held again in the Diephuiszaal at the Faculty of Law (Room 1217.0065, Oude Boteringestraat 18, Groningen). You can register to attend the meeting emailing m.rudolf.cibien@rug.nl. Large part of the meeting will be dedicated to a discussion with participants, so get prepared to open a debate! Drinks will follow.
Michele Molè (PhD candidate, Faculty of Law), will tell us three cases of contemporary workplace surveillance, below his abstract:
Watching their employees is an activity inextricably linked to a boss work routine. Tracking employees’ presence, productivity, or the safety of working environments fulfils various organisational and legal requirements. While we have been accustomed since the industrial revolutions to work under the eyes of human supervisors, this surveillance is now ‘disappearing’ behind screens, sensors, and cameras. In this talk, I present three stories of contemporary workplace surveillance to show how labour protection must tighten its meshes if it is to measure against exacerbated hierarchies at work.
